FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE • Sept. 21, 2005 Longwood
and Virginia Community Colleges sign
Cormier has spent the summer traveling to Virginia’s community colleges signing the agreement individually with each president. The agreement allows students that obtain their associate of arts or associate of science degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 to transfer all of their credits to Longwood. The agreement is an outgrowth of the new emphasis on transfer as stated in the Higher Education Restructuring Act approved by the Governor and General Assembly in 2005, which specifies that state four-year colleges and universities should adopt systemwide transfer agreements with Virginia’s community colleges. Longwood has had transfer agreements with the community colleges since 1991, but this new agreement adds the "guaranteed admission" component that allows Virginia’s students and their families a seamless pathway to the baccalaureate degree from community colleges. Cormier praised the quality of graduates of the Virginia Community College System and noted that "associate of arts and/or science degree holders have graduated from Longwood above the 80 percent rate with little to no change in their grade point averages." DuBois praised Cormier’s initiative in presenting the guaranteed admission agreement and said "Dr. Cormier is a strong advocate for community colleges and for the higher education community in the Commonwealth." The agreement goes into effect immediately. ### The State Board for Community Colleges is the governing board for the Virginia Community College System, which is made up of 23 community colleges located on 40 campuses across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia’s community colleges serve more than a quarter-million students in credit courses and more than 325,000 in credit and noncredit courses combined. Visit the website at http://www.vccs.edu. |
