About the College

Southwest Virginia Community College

The College is located at the foot of the majestic Clinch Mountains approximately halfway between Knoxville, Tennessee and Roanoke, Virginia.  The nearly 100 acre campus is one of the centerpieces of a vibrant rural community that is rich in regional cultural traditions and emerging high tech industries.  The College's foundation has assets of $13 million which is a testament to the support the alumni and community provide the college.
 
The College opened to students in the fall of 1968 with an initial enrollment of 710 students.  Today over 3,500 students are enrolled in credit courses and approximately 15,000 residents of the Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell and Tazewell counties are served through non-credit and community service programs during 2006.  Southwest Virginia Community College is truly a comprehensive institution of higher education and offers more than 80 programs of study leading to an associate degree, diploma, certificate of study leading to an associate degree, diploma, certificate or career studies certificate.
