PeopleSoft Web Server Requirements
|
Version: 1.1
Status: draft 6/21/2000
Contact: Brendan L. Hogan
Purpose
The purpose of this guideline is to define the acceptable PeopleSoft Web
Server configuration for deployment of the VCCS Student Information System and
Financials.
Scope
This guideline defines the web server component, the recommended operating
system software, and where the hardware should be deployed to support SIS web
access.
Applicability
This guideline covers all operating units of the VCCS.
Guideline
- The recommended hardware architecture for the VCCS Student Information System
(SIS) and Financials is a three-tiered architecture as defined by PeopleSoft.
- A standard PeopleSoft environment contains a web server to provide
web-browser based connectivity for web clients in addition to the windows
clients connected through a file server.
Web Servers
- Each college may deploy one or more dedicated PeopleSoft web servers on
the campus.
- Windows and web clients in a three-tier connection send Tuxedo messages to
the application server, in turn, sends the SQL to the database server.

Typical Web Server Hardware Configuration
- Processor: Dual Pentium III or higher. A larger
college should have a minimum of dual processors and should consider a server
capable of utilizing four to eight processors or potentially two or more servers
clustered and configured for load-balancing.
- Hard drive duplexing, 2 nine GB drives duplexed
would provide nine GB of space. (RAID5 optional hardware to enable a high level
of fault tolerance. 3 nine GB drives minimum would provide eighteen GB of
space.)
- Memory: 512 MB RAM minimum, 1024 MB minimum for
larger colleges. It is recommended that the amount of memory on the web server
be maximized to ensure optimum performance.
- VGA video controller and display (640x480 or higher
resolution supported)
- Network board(s)
- Tape backup system: Must have ample capacity and
speed to backup entire disk daily.
- CD-ROM Drive
- UPS: Capable of providing an unattended shutdown
after a minimum 10 minutes battery time.
- Network operating system: Windows NT with SP6a
installed.
- If Compaq server, Insight Manager agents should be
loaded for remote monitoring by Utility staff.
Typical Web Server Software Configuration
- These servers must use the Windows NT 4.0 operating system installed as a
standalone server with IIS 4.0 installed.
- The Utility will recommend performance and security modifications to enhance
the web server performance in the PeopleSoft environment.
