Horizontal Wiring

Horizontal wiring includes all media placed from the FLOOR WIRING CLOSET to the workstation (wall jack). All horizontal wiring must be placed in a physical star topology with the FWC as the center of the star.

GENERAL:
Due to the frequent moves and changes in the community college environment, it is important that standards be strictly followed, otherwise all economic advantages resulting from installation and maintenance contracts would be lost.
GAUGE:
To maintain the integrity of the entire copper pair network all horizontal copper cables will be 24 AWG solid wire.
TYPES:
Individual workstations (wall jacks) will be supplied with a minimum five (5) twisted pair cable (unrated) and a Level 5 four twisted pair cable. If video connection is desired an RG-58 coaxial cable will be added. If an FDDI or OC3 ATM direct connection is used, a two fiber zip-cord of 62.5 micron multimode fiber cable will be added. If interactive (2-way) non compressed video is used, a similar 62.5 micron multimode fiber zip-cord will be included.
JACKS:
The basic installation will require a jack plate with one RJ45C and one RJ11C jack on each plate. See figure 8-1.

The addition of coaxial cable will necessitate the addition of an F connector. See Figure 8-2. Extending multi-mode fiber to the jack will require the addition of two SC connectors as shown in Figure 8-3.

Finally the addition of another multimode fiber for video use will mean the addition of another SC connector as shown in Figure 8-4.

JACK TERMINATIONS:
Terminations for the RG-58 coaxial cable and all multimode fibers extended to the jack are explained above under JACKS. The unrated voice cable will be terminated on the upper RJ11 (voice) jack in accordance with the appropriate telephone specifications. The Category 5 cable will be terminated on the lower RJ45 (data) jack according to the applicable LAN specification. See Figure 8- 6.
NOTE:
Amendments to the above described wiring terminations may be made by revising the standard. Individual exceptions cannot be allowed and ensure prompt efficient maintenance. Impedance matching devices or similar attachments are not permitted on the wiring side of any jack.
FWC TERMINATIONS:
Terminations of the RG-58 coaxial will be on a patch panel mounted on a 19-inch rack for video terminations.

When installed, the 62.5 micron multimode fibers will be terminated on a panel mounted on a 19-inch rack for fiber terminations.

The copper twisted pairs will be terminated on Northern Telecom BIX, or equal, punch down strips. Punch down strips will be mounted on the wall of the WC adjacent to the backbone cable terminations. Pairs 1 through 4 will be terminated in that order and labeled with the appropriate room/jack number. Category 5 cable pairs 1 through 4 will be terminated on jack strips mounted on a 19-inch equipment rack dedicated to network terminations.

LENGTHS:
Horizontal wiring lengths from the FWC to the jack should not exceed 295 feet.
