Executive Summary of
Advanced Technology Network Initiatives
There are four base technologies that will provide the foundation for new and enhanced services for Net.Work.Virginia users. All of them require the use of ATM switched technology.
Classroom Based Videoconferencing:
The majority of colleges have an immediate need to expand videoconferencing support. The most cost-effective way of doing it is by using the new ATM switched features of Net.Work.Virginia. This initiative gives colleges the option of converting existing classrooms and/or adding new ones, based on the availability of college funds.
Full Screen, TV Quality Desktop Based Videoconferencing:
This is the technology that will eventually provide the same high quality video now being provided by the classroom technology. As noted above, it will take years to evolve to the point where it can actually replace the classroom system technology. VCCS will begin pilot testing this technology during the Fall Semester, with the intention of positioning itself to implement system-wide service as soon as possible.
Quarter Screen, Desktop Based Videoconferencing:
This technology provides interactive desktop conferencing for the VCCS community as a whole. In addition to individual college pilot projects, the VCCS has begun an inter college pilot project. The necessary hardware and software has been installed at the 12 participating colleges.
Voice Services:
There are two voice initiatives that use Net.Work.Virginia ATM switched technology. The first uses the Internet protocols to provide system-wide inter college telephone and FAX support. The second uses ATM to provide inter campus tie line support.
The new ATM switched services that these base technologies require will have to be implemented and validated in Net.Work.Virginia before they can be used. The validation of these new services calls for a joint project of all Net.Work.Virginia participants.
Net.Work.Virginia is developing a test plan for the new ATM switched services. The VCCS has contributed the portion of the plan that applies to VCCS Classroom capabilities and facilities. The Net.Work.Virginia staff has approved the VCCS plan. Validation of the upgraded Classroom technology will begin as soon as the necessary hardware arrives. VCCS will also work with other Net.Work.Virginia participants to validate inter agency configurations.
Full VCCS implementation of ATM switch based Classroom services is scheduled for May 1999.
