VCCNet ATM Network Project

ATM Hardware Support Guideline

Version: 1.0
Status: Proposed: 12/11/96
Contact: James Davis

PURPOSE

To provide guidelines governing the maintenance and support of the ATM hardware.

SCOPE

This guidelines covers the organizational elements and general responsibilities for support of the ATM switch and router.

APPLICABILITY

These guidelines are only applicable to the ATM hardware (switch and router) installed as the edge devices on the campuses providing direct connectivity to the DS3 circuit.

DEFINITION

The ATM switch and router installed at each campus providing direct connectivity to the DS3 circuit have been defined as the VCCNet edge devices.

GUIDELINE

The guidelines outlined in this document define the minimum set of expectations for the personnel responsible for setup, maintenance and support of the ATM hardware installed as the edge devices on the campuses. This guideline will be reviewed as necessary to reflect changes in technology and customer requirements.

Organizational Elements:

College:

Each campus and the System Office will install an ATM switch and router that will serve as the edge device or “the front door” to the college local infrastructure.

VCCS Network Operations Center (NOC):

The VCCS NOC will provide 7 day x 24 hour management support for the VCCS ATM Network which includes the monitoring of the ATM circuits, edge hardware, and services provided by the mainframe and compressed video hub centers.

VCCS Telecomm Engineers:

The VCCS Telecomm Engineering Group provides fault resolution for the VCCS intranet and internet services. They are responsible for the overall design, implementation, maintenance and support of the logical and physical infrastructure that serves as the transport for VCCS intranet and internet services.

VCCS Hardware/Software Supply Centers:

The supply centers will distribute replacement parts and software for the edge hardware; and ensure that stocks are replenished using vendor supplied maintenance contracts.

Responsibilities:

College:

  1. Provides adequate space and facilities to house the edge equipment.
  2. Provides for the maintenance and service of all edge hardware using established VCCS problem reporting and product support guidelines.
  3. Provides trained staff to implement local software configuration changes.

VCCS Telecomm Engineers:

  1. Plans and coordinates the implementation of major software version/releases for the ATM edge switches and routers.
  2. Plans and coordinates the implementation changes to the base software configuration (Management LIS, Data LIS, CVN, etc.) for the ATM edge switch.
  3. Reviews other software configuration changes for the ATM edge switch and routers implemented by the colleges.
  4. Reviews hardware configuration changes for the ATM edge switch and router.
  5. Provides direct assistance and support to all colleges requiring technical assistance with local changes, upon request.

VCCS Network Operations Center (NOC):

  1. Monitors edge devices and takes appropriate actions using established VCCS problem reporting and product support guidelines.

VCCS Hardware/Software Supply Centers:

  1. Distributes replacements parts and selective software for the ATM edge switch and router.

NOTE: The VCCS requests that all software/hardware configurations changes be coordinated with the System Offices ITS staff until the VCCS Telecomm and VCCS NOC have been formally established. The staff will be working to complete the major ATM Network implementation activities and it is very important that all work involving the switch and router be coordinated with the ITS staff during this interim period.
