Q - How do I find out what distance learning courses are available?

Use the VCCS Distance Learning Course Directory.

Additionally, each college publishes a list of courses (schedule of classes) that will tell you what is available at that college in a given term or semester. Colleges also publish this information on their web site. College Sites is a quick reference page with links to the colleges' distance learning sites. You can also contact the Admissions & Records Office at each college to obtain a printed version of their schedule of classes, and/or a college catalog.

Q - Once I find a course, how do I enroll?

You need to contact the Admissions & Records Office at your chosen college to ask about enrollment procedures. Many Admissions & Records Offices can be contacted by e-mail, and some have toll free telephone numbers. Visit a college's distance learning website to learn more about enrollment procedures at that college.

Q - Why should I take a course through distance learning? Why not just sign up for an on-campus course?

Many students need the schedule flexibility that distance learning courses offer. Because of job or family responsibilities, many distance learning students cannot attend on-campus classes on a regularly scheduled basis. By using technology, distance learning courses provide flexible and convenient ways for students to meet course requirements. The technology typically allows a student and teacher to "connect" to each other in different places or at different times.

Q - Is distance learning just an "easy" way to take a course?

Not really --- in fact, distance learning courses may not be "right" for you. Many distance learning courses can seem more difficult than the same class on-campus, because the student must be self-motivated, independent, and be able to schedule their own time wisely. Unlike a typical classroom where the teacher assumes most of the responsibility for telling students what to do, and when to do it, a distance learning course requires the individual student to assume most of the responsibility for learning.

Q - What kinds of distance learning technologies do VCCS colleges use?

VCCS colleges use a variety of distance learning technologies, including: the World Wide Web, e-mail, videotapes, interactive ("compressed") video, broadcast video, telecourses, audio conferencing, print-based materials, and combinations of technology and regular classroom-based instruction. Each technology format has advantages and disadvantages. Usually, the instructor, or the college's "distance learning contact person" can help explain some of the things to consider when selecting a distance learning technology format.

Q - Do I need special equipment to take distance learning courses?

Many colleges provide access to distance learning technology, if you can visit the campus. For some courses, you might need your own computer and an Internet connection. For other courses, you might need a VCR, or just a telephone. Some courses require that you have access to a special cable channel. Some courses, like interactive (compressed) video, require you to go to a campus in order to use special equipment. The college's distance learning contact person can help explain any equipment requirements for distance learning courses.
