Thanks to Joann Cage (SSVCC), Lester Smith and Kelly Snell (BRCC), Mia Fittz (VWCC), Betty Domjahn (VHCC) and Charlie Mitchell (PVCC) for their contributions in refining a statewide career pathways framework. This Tech Prep tool for guidance counselors and career coaches maps out business and industry endorsed plans of study for four years of high school and two years of community college. The frameworks are targeted to students seeking both a college degree and job placement in the skilled and technical workforce. For more information on this project, contact Elizabeth Creamer at ecreamer@vccs.edu.

The viticulture and enology program at PVCC began as a pilot program in 2004 with an Institutes of Excellence grant from the VCCS. The curriculum was developed in answer to the needs of the Monticello Wine Trail vineyards and wineries. Citing the need for qualified workers, vineyard owners and managers recommended expanding the program to include additional courses in vineyard management and winemaking. The viticulture program includes a series of courses on growing grapes and managing the vineyard. The enology program includes courses on wine making, wine tasting and marketing strategies. Students take all of the courses in the series to earn a noncredit certificate. Teaching the courses are experts in vineyard management, wine making and marketing from regional vineyards and wineries. Local vineyards and wineries host the classes, giving the students experience in the industry at a variety of operations. Classes are offered on Saturdays, and include lunch and a wine tasting at the host vineyard or winery. |
Marine Trades
Workforce & Community Development (WCD) offers ABYC certifications for marine industry professionals. Basic Engine, Electrical, and Diesel certifications are being offered again in Feb. 2006. A new offering--- Gasoline certification--has been added this year. Plans are underway to add Corrosion certification in 2007. Also, plans are underway for a high school dual enrollment program for the Northern Neck in Fall ’06.
Command Spanish
WCD receives a huge reponse for Command Spanish. Over 20 Northern Neck Head Start teachers recently participated in Command Spanish to assist Hispanic students and parents.
Special Education Institute -- Highly Qualified
WCD spearheaded the development of a credit program for special education elementary, middle and high school teachers. Teachers are required to be "highly qualified" by July 2006. RCC receives over 200 enrollments for this program.

| On the weekend of January 27, 28, and 29, 2006 Wytheville Community College (WCC) hosted a Regional Job Fair. The event was planned and conducted through the efforts of the local Industrial Development Authority, Virginia Employment Commission, Department of Social Services, Department of Business Assistance and WCC’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development Office. The Job Fair was an outstanding success in several ways: Thirty-three employers staffed booth exhibits to communicate their needs and interests to the job seekers. Nearly 2,100 applicants attended. Thirty-one percent of the applicants were unemployed. Originally a two day event, the Fair was extended to a third day before day one was completed.
Needless to say, WCC staff had many opportunities to network with employers and job seekers to promote credit and non-credit courses at the College.

In early December, the Continuing Education / Workforce Development Staff at Wytheville CC and the Department of Social Services Staff for Carroll and Grayson Counties developed a class to assist DSS Clients.
Designed to improve job search skills, this one credit class is being offered at The Crossroads Institute in Galax. Ms. Linda Phipps is the Instructor.
The first class of 12 students began January 6 th and met on four consecutive Fridays. Subjects included Communications, Team Building, Ethics, and Job Readiness Skills (Resume Writing, Interviewing and Key Train Tutorials). On the fifth Friday, five of the students took the CRC tests.
Here is the terrific news…..all five of those tested qualified for a CRC. The breakdown is as follows: Gold – 1; Silver – 3; and Bronze – 1.
The second class began February 3 rd. It is expected that one class will be conducted each month and that the program will reach well over one hundred DSS clients this year. The goal is an improvement in the welfare-to-work conversion rate. All costs are being paid by the DSS offices.
